Affection

On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon last year, Heather and I went for a stroll near Albert Park in the city. We had only been dating for a little while then, and we just wanted to touch all the time. Of course, some idiots drove past, saw us holding hands, and screamed insults at us. Tonight we were walking home from a friend's house when I realised then that we no longer hold hands on main roads, only on the side streets. And never in the daytime, only at night.

Day or night, groups of 15-25 year old males in cars are wont to hurl verbal abuse and/or eggs (or similar) and everyone is more or less an easy target.

I used to think it was only the Asian/female/fat/same-sex coupled/etc of us who suffered, but not long ago a straight/white/tall/fit/21 year old acquaintance told me he gets it too.

I've held hands with my partner uncountable times at Indooroopilly Shoppingtown and Toowong Village (the local malls), the Queen St Mall, at IKEA, ...in suburban Sunnybank the other night, pretty much wherever we've been in the past 1.5 years and we've received nary a sideways glance.

The one time we were targeted we weren't even holding hands! The culprits were male youths, in a car, and we were just waiting to cross an intersection in the Valley, with a Japanese friend, and they threw an egg at us. Because she's Asian? Because we're lesbian? Disturbed, I reported it to the nearby police but they said it happens to everyone.

So, Heather and Michelle, hold your hands everywhere, especially in the daytime and especially in crowds, just be wary around streets frequented by dickheads in cars.
